Growing up
Today I am talking about the differences between homes in Sweden and the US. I will start by talking about how I grow up in an apartment. I grow up in a suburb of Stockholm called Bollmora in Tyresö. When we first moved there Bollmora was just two streets and was at the beginning of what would become the most child intense suburb in all of Sweden.
I will explain some of the differences in our housing and how we describe our homes.
First experience of a home in the US
I then continue to describe my first experience when I came to the US and the house I would call home for many years. How confused I was when I realized that the way we describe homes in Sweden compared to the description in the USA had fooled me to think that the house I was to move into was so much bigger than I have expected.
I also talk about other observations about behavior that are different in our homes, such as shoes on or off, AC or not, drinking tap water, and much more.
Next week
In next week’s episode, the topic will be the Swedish Du-reformen. How we in Sweden practically have stopped using titles and last names when talking to people, even people we are not that familiar with, and how I had a hard time adjusting to especially the work environment here when I first moved over.
